If you haven't read this story, you must. I would rank Polivka's novel with the elite in Christian fantasy and sci-fi. His is unique, but I enjoyed it just as much as C.S. Lewis' Narnia, and just as much as Walter M. Miller's A Canticle for Leibowitz. ~ Brandon Barr, "Christian Science Fiction"

Welcome, weary traveler, to the Kingdom of Nearing Vast!

You will find the good people here to be kind and generous souls whose most earnest desire is to help. So, in that spirit, just a few words of caution.

First, pirates. Stay away from the taverns and inns nearest the docks, particularly those in the City of Mann. Croc-Eyed Sam's, though well known as a colorful establishment, gets a bit too colorful for most tastes. If you must go, go armed.

Second, scalawags and ruffians, also known as highwaymen. Travel in groups and in daylight, and there should be no trouble at all. A well-concealed pistol in easy reach is always a good choice.

Third, spies and assassins. The Kingdom of Drammun is ever desirous of plundering our fair cities, so be careful to whom you reveal any trade secrets, military matters, or personal plans. Weapons can be had at small price from almost any merchant or trading post. Worth the investment.

Fourth, the sea monsters known as Firefish. As a precaution, sail in a flotilla of other ships, the larger the better. An armada if you can get one. No known weapons will penetrate their hides, but keep close to a loaded cannon anyway, if only for peace of mind.

So, following these simple rules, enjoy your travels! If you have any other questions, or would like to rub elbows with the locals, visit my pub. If I don't have answers, I can usually get them. And if I can't, I know who can!

Sincerely, Cap Hillis
